Owyhee Signage

Friday January 6 2011

You gotta love some of the Owyhee signs. One can really express oneself with signs.

The top sign was likely put up by someone who's not particularly fond of government workers.

But wait! More was added to it later.

The road is even more closed to a certain family and companions, and they are specifically not allowed to poach or steal. Hmmm.

Then there's the Warning sign,

which, if you can't read it for all the bullet holes, says,

"THIS ROAD CROSSES
US AIR FORCE BOMBING RANGE
FOR THE NEXT 12 MILES
OBJECTS MAY FALL FROM AIRCRAFT"

Guess it's best to wear your riding helmet as you drive these twelve miles, if you have one.

Gotta love Owyhee!

  1. There's one as you're entering Lake Lahontan (the reservoir) where the NEDA rides are, and it says "Don't drink and boat" and "have a designated driver." Kinda boring. But as you're leaving the park, the other side says "Do you have everybody?" I crack up every time thinking about dudes out there drinkin and fishin and getting so drunk they forget a kid or something. "Oh shit, we forgot Tommy!"

  2. The astonishingly-effective sign on our front gate reads "Keep Gate Closed--BAD DOGS"!

Most people interpret this as "the dogs will eat you up and spit out the bones", but it actually means, "my dogs are naughty and will chase the neighbor's chickens".

  3. Wow! Reminds me of the scene from "Wild America" - maybe best to Not go there! :-)

  4. *LOL* "Objects may fall from from aircraft," sounds like a bit of an understatement.

I would think they would close that stretch of road if they were doing practice runs??? Good grief.

  6. We have a lot of bullet riddled signs in Utah, but I haven't driven across a bombing range. Yep, a helmet of some kind would be a good plan.

  7. Too funny that they came back later and banned a particular family!

I was also thinking the 'OBJECTS MAY FALL FROM AIRCRAFTS' statement was a little under done.

  8. What a warm, friendly place that ranch must be! I've always been a little scared of that neck of the woods, especially since I'm one of those "jack-booted thug" federal types. ;-)

  9. Maybe they only drop things in office hours? It would be nice if they put up a red flag or something when that happens. But that would require a government official who isn't welcome. Oh well, you're getting "bombed" for freedom.
