The Evening Stroll
Saturday September 8 2012
Whether they're up the canyon, or just across the creek, they always come back down around dinner time: 3 of them get grain, the others are forever hopeful.
Sometimes they come thundering down; today they strolled lazily down to the house.
All except for the 3 stragglers:
Mama Perry
Luna
Sunny

Running With The Big Dogs
Wednesday July 18 2012
We didn't see Owyhee Super Luna for 2 weeks while we were at City of Rocks, and while she grew bigger, she didn't forget us. She whinnied a greeting when I got back.
Besides mom Perry, 1 or 2 aunts or uncles hang out with her in her big home pen. On her 10-week-old birthday, we let her out for the first time with the whole herd.
Here's how it went:

Monster's First Day
Monday May 14 2012
It's hard work being a baby horse on the first day of life, coming from a dark and quiet womb into all the sights and colors and sounds and smells of a new world, figuring out the food source, and the long legs that wobble and won't fold right.
Steph's new little monster on the crick - could one day be her new endurance horse! - got a new name which is debuted in this video I made of her on her first day on earth!

Monster on the Crick!
Tuesday May 8 2012
There she was, gangly legs, wobbly knees and all, by the time we got up this morning.
She's light brown, but will likely turn gray like her mama.
She nursed, she pooped, and was soon looking for a way to fold those long legs to lay down and take a nap. It would take a structural engineer to figure that one out - which she hadn't figured out yet, while I was watching.
A nice morning surprise, a new little monster on the crick!

The Bag
Thursday May 3 2012
Perry's big as a house, foal parts poking on all angles of her belly. She's due today!
Her nipples have enlarged, and she's started to 'bag up', and while often the udder will get round and full, and the teats will start to wax, that's not always the case. Maiden mares (and experienced ones), I'm told, don't always follow the rules.
The pelvic ligaments around the tail will relax in preparation for the stretching during labor and foaling, but I can't tell if that's happened or not. It's more common for a mare to foal during the night, but the last mare Princess that gave birth here foaled middle of the day during a busy riding clinic.
So if Perry doesn't give us these obvious signs, we might just wake up to a surprise one morning.

Coalesce
Thursday December 16 2010
I turned the Gray Mare (named Perry) out with the whole herd today... and it was about as uneventful as it could get.
I timed it after everyone had had their breakfast, and it was time for a morning siesta as the sun rays crested the bluffs, starting to thaw the 8* morning and warm up furry horse hides.
Perry and her babysitter Krusty strolled out into the big paddock... and everybody just stood there in a sort of morning sun stupor, watching her.
Eventually, one by one, the horses moseyed up to her to give her the Owyhee Welcome (From most of them: "You're new. Get away.") No serious chasing though, no biting, only one or two squeals; and Perry mostly ignored them.
It's all about the ears - you can watch a horse's ears and pretty much tell what they're thinking.
Perry: Keeping an eye/ear on Jose, but not worried. Jose: Interested!
Perry: wary of Ted. Ted: Doesn't particularly like her.
Smokey: doesn't like Perry!
Sunny: doesn't like Perry!
Rhett: doesn't like Perry!
Perry: keeping an eye/ear on Jose and Batman, but not worried. Jose and Batman: interested!
Rhett: still doesn't like her!
Perry: uninterested. Jose: still interested! (Later I saw him trying to get her to play!)
Give her a few days... and she'll slip in with the herd like she's always been here.
