It was probably more like a piece of hay that poked him in the eye, but it was bad enough at noon to leave Jose with a weeping, swollen eye (surely aggravated by him rubbing it). In the desert, one might immediately suspect a cactus thorn as the assailant, but the poke probably happened a couple of days ago and was likely from stemmy hay.
Veterinarian Dr Stacey Sickler, a friend from seems like eons ago, was able to come out in the afternoon; and by staining his eye, we could all clearly see a couple of scratches on the bottom corner of his eyeball. She left us with antibiotic ointment to put in his eye four times a day for the next week or two, and this spiffy pirate mask (racehorse blinkers, with strong velcro holding an eye shield in place) for him to wear.
Though he doesn't enjoy having a sore eye, Jose thinks he makes quite the dashing, swashbuckling pirate on this ocean of desert sand.
oh damn! I love the mask though. Major did that this fall, though he was a very bad patient and needed tons of sedation just for the eye stain. I'm glad Jose was good and is on the road to recovery...and sailing the high seas, matey!
ReplyDeleteHe looks more like an alien than a pirate, but at least his eye is protected!
ReplyDeleteYou know, that would have been a perfect solution for all of Baasha's eye troubles. Why the German vets (and clinic vets!) didn't think of it...no, they told me to hang blankets in his stall to block light. *shakes head*
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry... but *chuckle* he does look dashing! :) Glad you could get a vet out to take a peek xox
ReplyDeleteAvast me mateys! Raise the skull and crossbones on the nearest cactus and prepare to set sail! Jose does indeed look dashing. May he soon reform his pirating ways, though, with a well-healed eye. Glad it wasn't something more serious.
ReplyDeleteJose says, "Ahoy Mateys! and thanks for your concern!" His eye is already looking better.
ReplyDeleteBut would somebody tell me HOW, every morning, he has managed to remove not only his mask, but the halter on top of it???? As they are always laying in the dirt along the corral fence with his neighbors, I am pretty sure they work together to disrobe him every night!
awwwww poor guy!
ReplyDeleteHave to "laugh" at the new "look"! :-) Stylin' that's what he's doing! He's calling it the "Race Horse" look :-0
