I've seen owls more frequently, having moved my mare to a place where the farmer deliberately leaves strips of land as uncultivated grass so that rodents thrive to feed the owls. They have become quite bold now, even flying during daylight. But without snow I don't get to see scenes such as the one you have explained so nicely.
