Stagecoach Etiquette #1: Selfish and Un-neighborly

Monday March 11 2013

Confession: I am addicted to Bonanza re-runs. And seeing as it looks like everybody's going to return to the Wild West and start wearing their six-shooters on their hips again like those glory days of old (actually we have a neighbor who does regularly, and I spent a lunch at a local small-town burger joint sitting beside a rancher with one on his hip), I think it's time we start getting ready for a return to horses for transportation, with buggies, wagons, and stagecoaches.

Preparing for the time we'll be traveling those long distances by stagecoach, we will be reviewing, from time to time, proper stagecoach etiquette. That way,

"Adherence to the rules will insure a pleasant trip for all."

#1. "Abstinence from liquor is requested, but if you must drink share the bottle. To do otherwise makes you appear selfish and un-neighborly."

  1. Great idea! The whole world needs to slow down. Although there is a lot to be said about the advancements in suspension for those rough stagecoach roads.

  2. Sorry, but guns on the hip make me nervous. Not sure I'd want to share a drink with a guy carrying a loaded weapon. What if I said, "No?" *G*

  3. If everyone assumed the other guy was packing a gun we might be a little more civil to one another. Where we live you better be prepared to face a gun if you break into a house. Works for me.

  4. I wouldn't mind going back to buggies and stagecoaches but I'm not very comfortable with guns on hips in public. I'm not opposed to people owning guns but wearing them as an wardrobe accessory really doesn't do it for me.

  5. My dad was a cop so guns on the hip don't bother me. But pit stops from a stagecoach could be a bit dicey. I mean, squatting in stilettos can be a bit of a challenge even for me!

  7. No problem with guns, looking for a holster now, so I can walk up my own road & have protection against the "neighbor's" pits! I'd bring my own flask when on the coach! :-)

  8. When we're back to stagecoaches then outlaws may be on the agenda too - in which case it would be best to stay sober and keep firearms to hand. And if the ladies can shoot straight, all the better.

  9. I'm good with Bonanza, guns on the hips (or in the purse), and peeing in the bushes. It's all good.

  11. I had this conversation the other day that my perfect holiday would be going out with the family with a horse and wagon. That way we could take the dogs and other horses...kid could ride the pony sometimes, play in the wagon when she got sick of riding, seeing the countryside slowly and fully, and camping at night!! What could be more fun!?

  12. I recently used a Bonanza clip to illustrate the "men without women" theme of many TV shows in that era (My Three Sons, The Rifleman, etc). Students were shocked to see how the Chinese cook was treated.
